Andrew McMurray & Team Zachys Take On Ironman World Championships In Kona Hawaii To Go BOSTON STRONG On Behalf Of The Richard Family Foundation.
Kona Hawaii – On Saturday morning October 12th over 2,100 of the world’s finest triathletes descended on the harbor in Kailua Kona to start each of their journeys’ to complete one of the most challenging triathlons in the world. Each athlete had their own story, their own journey and their own path that got them to the pinnacle of this sport.
An ironman consists of a 2.4 mile open water swim, 112 mile bike ride and finishing with a full marathon (26.2 miles). Add to that the heat and humidity associated with running and biking in the lava fields of the big island of Hawaii and you have one of the biggest hurdles in sports today.
Andrew McMurray (A native of Longmeadow, MA) has been competing in triathlons for 5 years, having a charitable benefactor associated with the efforts of his racing for each tri season. Along with his whole support team at his place of business (Zachys Wine & Liquor, Scarsdale, NY), McMurray has raised $150,000+ for worthy causes prior to 2013.
April 14th, 2013 took on a very special meaning when McMurray was awarded a lottery slot to the Ironman World Championships (100 names selected from 15,000 entrants!!). His ultimate elation turned to shock and horror when he saw the city of Boston rocked by the devastating events of April 15th.
The motivation and drive to this weekend’s race was set in stone. Zachys and McMurray were going to pour all their efforts into raising funds and awareness on behalf of The Richard Family Foundation.
McMurray successfully completed his journey this past Saturday completing the race in 12:49:28 and raising over $21,000 on behalf of Denise & Bill Richard, children Jane and Henry and the memory of 8 year old Martin who lost his life on this terrible day.
McMurray’s “Boston Strong” screams of elation as he crossed the finish line on Saturday night were a testament to the strength and resiliency of the human spirit.
